Signature Recruitment: A Female-Led Business

The campaign theme for International Women's Day this years is Inspire Inclusion, which is something our founders Evelin and Sharon have been championing since the very start.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women around the world and to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality.

Women-run businesses play a crucial role in the global economy; they bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and a unique approach to leadership that can drive success and growth.

For International Women’s Day this year, we’d like to reflect on our own female-led and owned business and its founders, Evelin Zauchner and Sharon Alred.

Sharon and Eve celebrating Female-Led Recruitment Success

How Signature Recruitment started

Signature Recruitment was founded by Evelin and Sharon with the joint ambition to create a different kind of recruitment consultancy.

Having worked together at a large, male-dominated corporate where they were both global top performers, they decided to take the leap in 2010:

“Eve and I made a pinkie promise at a bar in Vegas after hours discussing what mattered to us. We knew what we were looking for next in our careers. As we were self-funded, we started small, with a cubbyhole in London with a fax machine (it was 2010!) and a small office in Bristol overlooking Brandon Hill. We’ve grown steadily since then.” – Sharon.

Since those early days, both offices have moved several times and the teams have expanded, but the same core values still drive us:

Excellence – Do what you say you will and do it well.

Growth – Stay hungry to improve.

Enthusiasm – Love what you do.

“When we set up Signature, we didn’t even realise being women in business was a big deal. Our focus was on delivering an excellent service, great results and doing the fundamentals really well.” – Evelin

Some highlights from the past 14 years

When Signature started, Evelin and Sharon felt the simplicity of making great placements was how to run a recruiting company. That hasn’t changed.

They both fondly remember their first placements, Bec B and Chloe C.

Word soon spread, more clients joined and they started to build and expand their teams in both offices.

Living Wage Recognised Service Provider

Living Wage Foundation Recognised Service Provider

In 2015, Signature became one of the first recognised service providers with the Living Wage Foundation. Championing the belief that, “a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay!”

The Living Wage is independently calculated based on actual living costs, unlike the National Wages offered by the government. Our employers choose to pay The Real Living Wage voluntarily because it provides an ethical benchmark for responsible pay.

The Signature Professional Mentoring Programme

The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. We Inspire Inclusion for younger generations too. With our Signature Professional Mentoring Programme, we are proud to support our local community. We do this by mentoring students, providing advice, guidance and practical expertise on CVs, interviews, applications and more.

We were thrilled when the programme won the Heart of the City Award 2022 as part of The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Award.

“Being recognised for going that extra mile is an absolute honour. When we found out we were finalists for the 2nd time, the team were ecstatic. It re-emphasised the hard work they put in to help young people in our local community. I am very proud of what they have achieved and their efforts to grow the programme to reach more graduates in the future.” – Evelin.

Charities and organisations we support

In line with one of our core values of ‘Growth’, we are pleased to help power education and learning by supporting the charity Magic Breakfast. They are committed to providing breakfast to disadvantaged school children in the UK. This means we donate a meal for each completed feedback form we receive, thanks to our candidates and clients.

The London office has also partnered with Dress for Success on several fundraising events helping to empower women in the workplace. Providing professional clothing, interview coaching and ongoing support once they re-join the workplace.

The Bristol team regularly collaborate with BristolWorks. Linking local employers with young people in the community through the provision of CV workshops to increase employability.

Female-Led Business

Female-led Signature Recruitment today

The number of women in senior leadership roles has grown in recent years and that’s good for business. Companies led by women or gender-diverse teams are 21% more likely to bring in more profits than companies led by all-male teams.

However, it’s important to understand that gender biases still exist and there are often stereotypes about which functions women are expected to excel in.

As this year’s International Women’s Day campaign aims to highlight, there are many ways we can all inspire inclusion through simple actions, such as:

Providing women and girls with access to quality education.

     Recruiting and developing female talent.

     Supporting women into leadership positions.

While being a female-led business is something we are proud of, we’re even prouder to champion women, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

The next 15 years

Nearly 15 years later, we have remained completely aligned with our vision for Signature. We feel very proud that we have created a company that has helped over ten thousand people find work.

Whilst being a female-led business doesn’t define us, perhaps as female leaders, we’re able to recognise talent and potential in other women. So have typically been a majority female workforce since inception. There are so many statistics about women only applying for roles where they have 100% of the qualifications. Whereas men will put themselves forward with just 60%. We’d like to do our part to change that.

“We are also very proud of the team and the staff that have worked with us over the years. Mostly women, who we have helped and developed. So, here’s to the next 15 years and more female-run businesses.” – Sharon.
